South Korean wind turbine manufacturer chooses Orbital in Skjern
South Korea is ambitious in the field of energy. The country has set aside more than DKK 300 billion by 2025 for the transition towards renewable energy and the ambition is to be climate neutral by 2050. This requires efforts in a country where coal-fired power plants supply more than 40% of the electricity for heavy industrial production.
To fulfill the green plans, the South Korean companies need to find manufacturers and partners to supply them with components and know-how within sustainable energy.
Geumpoong Inc. is a South Korean manufacturer of grid-connected small wind turbines with a power output of 10-20 kW. When Geumpoong began the development of their wind turbine, they were searching for a consistent and competent supplier of control systems and electrical components.
They traveled to Denmark to visit Orbital to see the production of control panels at the factory in Skjern. Following the visit, Orbital was chosen as the supplier of wind turbine controllers and sensors (wind vane, anemometer, and vibration sensor). The TMC3 wind turbine controller is connected to OrbiSCADA where data is collected and stored in the SCADA system.
In addition to the role as component supplier, Orbital has solved various development tasks to optimize the TMC-3 wind turbine controller and the electrical components for the needs in the home country of Geumpoong. About the collaboration with Orbital, Geumpoong states:
“The ongoing support from Orbital has been very important to us. We experience a short response time and a positive attitude to make changes and adjustments. OrbiSCADA is a crucial tool in support cases. Orbital can quickly see the current status of the wind turbines and their history, including errors and parameter changes”.
Currently, Geumpoong has installed close to 10 wind turbines in South Korea. The first ones as test wind turbines to get the relevant certifications and approvals in place and the rest on market terms. The expectation going forward is more installations in South Korea and export to other Asian markets.
